Teacher’s Guide to Current Self-Learning Offerings at Lingoda
Learning a language is like building a house. You need strong bricks (knowledge) and
tools (practice) to make it stand tall. At EFL Academy Hub, we help students build their language skills with both lessons and extra practice. This guide will explain why practicing on your own (self-learning) is important and how it helps you learn better.
In today’s fast-paced world, where learning a new language is more accessible than ever, the importance of self-learning cannot be overstated. At EFL Academy Hub, we believe that self-learning is the key to bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. As educators, it’s essential to guide and motivate students to make the most of these opportunities. In this short guide, we’ll explore why self-learning is crucial, how it complements online lessons, and the resources available to students.
Why is Self-Learning Practice Important?
Self-learning is a critical component of language mastery. It reinforces the lessons learned during classes and accelerates the process of language acquisition. While our structured lessons provide the foundational knowledge, it’s the continual ( repetition – remember when we were babies? Cat, hat, mat etc… Mom, Mummy, Papa) practice through self-learning that solidifies this knowledge and turns it into real-world proficiency. As teachers, we play a vital role in encouraging students to engage with self-learning tools, ensuring they understand the long-term benefits of consistent practice.
Our courses are designed for students who already have some basic English skills and can speak, listen, and read with a bit of understanding. To improve further, I recommend a great method called “killing six birds with one stone!” One action = Six results:).
Here’s how it works: Read and speak a book you like at the same time. While you’re doing this, write down any new words you don’t know. After you finish reading and speaking, look up the meanings/definitions of those words. Then, use these new words to make sentences.
This approach helps you practice 1. grammar, 2. reading, 3. listening, 4. speaking, and 5. writing, all while learning new 6. vocabulary. For a recommended book, try “Mother Tongue” by Bill Bryson. It’s excellent, funny, and provides a deep look into the English language.
Why We Motivate Students to Use Self-Learning in Addition to Online Lessons?
- Reinforcement of Knowledge: Self-learning allows students to revisit and reinforce the concepts and vocabulary covered in their lessons, ensuring better retention and understanding.
- Autonomy in Learning: Encouraging self-learning empowers students to take control of their educational journey, fostering a deeper connection with the language and increasing motivation.
- Flexibility and Convenience: Self-study is adaptable to each student’s schedule, allowing them to learn at their own pace and on their own time, making language learning more accessible and less stressful.
- Personalized Learning Experience: Through self-learning, students can focus on areas where they need the most improvement, leading to a more effective and customized learning experience.
- Continuous Learning: Regular engagement with self-learning materials ensures ongoing progress, helping students to maintain and enhance their language skills between lessons.
Why Should You Practice on Your Own?
- Remember More: Practicing on your own helps you remember what you learn in class.
- Learn at Your Own Pace: You can study whenever you want, which helps you learn better.
- Feel More Confident: The more you practice, the more confident you will feel when speaking or writing.
- Focus on Your Needs: You can choose what to practice more based on what you find difficult.
- Keep Learning: Practicing every day helps you keep improving, even when you don’t have a class.
